Description

Description

The Future Proofing in Australia’s Electricity Distribution Industry project aims to enhance the flexibility and resilience of Australia’s electricity distribution system. The Clean Energy Council will conduct extensive consultations with industry, government, regulators and consumers, and commission technical, economic and regulatory analysis Australia’s electricity distribution systems were developed decades ago at a time when electricity generation was highly centralised, with few new entrants to the market. The way Australian energy consumers use electricity is rapidly changing. Demand is falling and there are new entrants to the market like renewable energy power stations and households generating their own solar power.A paradigm shift is occurring and our electricity distribution systems were not set up with this use in mind. The Clean Energy Council has identified an urgent need to examine these systems, following extensive consultation with industry.Project innovationThe Clean Energy Council will leverage its relationships, technical expertise and industry knowledge to bring together all the relevant players with the aim of enhancing the flexibility and resilience of Australia’s electricity distribution systems. The Future Proofing in Australia’s Electricity Distribution Industry project will also include technical, economic and regulatory analysis that will provide a framework for discussions at various forums and events. The knowledge gained and shared throughout the project will assist the transition towards a more sophisticated grid.BenefitWith much of Australia’s ageing electricity infrastructure nearing the end of its lifespan, this project seeks to future-proof our electricity distribution industry for increasing renewable energy generation.By discussing, identifying and implementing pathways to an enhanced electricity distribution system, the opportunities for Australian electricity networks, retailers, consumers and producers will significantly increase.Improving the way the electricity industry interacts with distributed generation, demand management, storage and the associated new technologies will address many of the challenges facing the continued growth of renewable energy and the associated enabling technologies. These new arrangements aim to make it easier and cheaper for companies and individuals to invest in renewable energy throughout Australia. This will open up the market to new entrants, make Australia a more attractive investment destination and allow households to take control of their power production.BackgroundThe Clean Energy Council is the peak body for the renewable energy and energy efficiency industry in Australia. It represents and works with leading businesses operating in solar, wind, energy efficiency, hydro, bioenergy, energy storage, geothermal, marine and cogeneration along with 4500 solar installers. The Clean Energy Council is committed to accelerating the transformation of Australia’s energy system to one that is smarter, cleaner and more consumer-focused.
