In February 2007, the Government of Gabon divested partially Gabon Telecom by selling 51% of its stake to Vivendi's subsidiary Maroc Telecom at a price of US$79 million. Gabon Telecom was the national telecom operator and had monopoly on landline services in the country. A key asset of Gabon Telecom was its wholly owned GSM subsidiary Libertis. As of December 2007, Gabon Telecom had 23 500 fixed lines connections and 386 300 mobile lines connections. Gabon Telecom was also a shareholder of the Sat-3/WASC submarine cable and proposed a wide range of services such as ISP, data-transmission services through VSAT, and radio and TV signal transmissions. The award followed a competitive bidding process. It was reported than about 10 companies expressed their interest in the divestiture. However, the exact number of bidders and their names were not disclosed.
