Description
Description | The Gaia Project is a 3-year Volunteering Teams in High priority areas project based in 4 different European countries. It centralizes the permaculture design approach and its principles as the core methodology for fostering sustainable and inclusive learning environments. This project aims to reimagine traditional educational paradigms, moving beyond a human-centric worldview to one where the Earth and its elements are integral to our collective narrative. At the heart of the Gaia Project lies the commitment to integrate permaculture ethics - care for the earth, care for people, and fair share - into the fabric of non-formal educational practices, particularly focusing on youth with fewer opportunities and marginalized communities. The project envisions an educational system where permaculture is not just a subject but a way of thinking and living, influencing all aspects of learning and community engagement. Over three years, the project's main objectives are: Year 1 - Observe and Interact: This phase emphasizes the connection with nature and the application of permaculture ethics in everyday life. Volunteer teams in Greece and Italy will engage in activities that exemplify permaculture principles, encouraging a sustainable lifestyle and fostering a deep understanding of environmental interconnectivity. Year 2 - Use and Value: The second year focuses on the permaculture principle of valuing diversity. Here, the project extends to Greece and Bulgaria, where activities are designed to integrate cultural diversity from marginalized communities with sustainable living, underscoring the importance of varied perspectives and approaches. Year 3 - Creatively Use and Respond to Change: The final year is dedicated to creatively responding to environmental challenges. Volunteers in Greece and Portugal will explore sustainable solutions and strategies against climate change, highlighting permaculture's role in fostering adaptive and resilient communities. |
