Description | The Gaines County Power Plant is a proposed gas-fired power plant to be built just across the border from Hobbs, New Mexico, in Texas. The project is part of a $10 billion plan by Southwestern Public Service Company that includes new transmission lines, extended closure dates for coal-fired plants, and eight new power facilities including natural gas, solar, wind, and battery systems. The plant is planned to have a 40-year service life and is part of an application seeking exceptions to New Mexico's Energy Transition Act to qualify part of its energy as zero-carbon and to exempt it from zero-carbon requirements to preserve system reliability and protect customers from bill impacts. |
