Description
Description | The project involves rebuilding the Mahamodara Maternity Hospital in Galle, which was damaged by the tsunami in December 2004, at a location further inland near the Galle General Hospital. The project was started in 2006 on the private initiative of the Helmut Kohl Maternity Hospital Galle Foundation (HKMHGF) and was suspended in 2008 due to a lack of funds. As a teaching hospital and reference center for obstetrics and gynecology in the Southern Province of Sri Lanka, the Mahamodara Maternity Hospital in Galle reaches a target population of around 3 million people. It currently cares for around 12,000 births each year. In addition to maternity care and the treatment of complicated cases as part of its specialization, the maternity hospital also provides training and further education services and monitors the subordinate reference level. The aim of restoring appropriate maternity care is to make a contribution to improving the health situation of the population in the Southern Province. The FC funds totaling EUR 41.0 million (subsidized loan in two credit tranches) are to be used to finance the construction work, including construction supervision and essential medical and non-medical equipment, with the exception of the priming work that has already been completed and financed. The project sponsor is the Ministry of Health. Sri Lanka's own contribution consists in providing the building site. |
