Gambia - Rural Electrification Project

The Rural Electrification Project is a major project of government’s economic policy, which is aimed at the stimulation of economic growth and the improvement of the social conditions of the population by bringing basic services to the rural areas. This project should enhance the economic opportunities of the population in these areas and improve their social well being thereby assisting in the reduction of poverty in the country. It should contribute to a reduction in the rate of rural migration to Greater Banjul area. In addition, the project should improve access of the inhabitants to social services and assist the government in its decentralisation programme aimed at ensuring wider participation of the population in decision making process regarding the development and management of the affairs of the country. The project consists of: (i) Construction of six power stations; (ii) Supply, Installation and Rehabilitation of Transmission and Distribution Networks; (iii) Compensation; (iv) Supply and Installation of Environmental Monitoring Equipment; (v) Consultancy Services for Supervision and Audit.
