In the Gao region, as in the whole of northern Mali, a combination of a deteriorating security situation and the slow implementation of the 2015 peace agreement, combined with state fragility and complex structural problems, can be observed. The aim of the project is to improve the living conditions of the population in Gao and thus contribute to stabilization and peace consolidation in the region. To this end, rural slopes are primarily being repaired. In addition, accompanying socio-economic measures along the improved slopes are being financed in order to support the exploitation of the socio-economic effects of the slopes and at the same time strengthen the resilience of the local population. Just like the slope sections, the specific measures will be selected in the course of implementation with close involvement of the local population and local authorities, based on needs and can, for example, include employment-oriented activities such as market infrastructure. The aim is to make all construction measures as labor-intensive as possible (cash for work) in order to create short-term income and employment opportunities, which should show young people in particular a perspective beyond violence. Finally, the capacities of the most important local actors for the implementation, operation and maintenance of the individual measures are to be strengthened. The political sponsor of the project is the Ministère de l'Administration Territoriale et de la Décentralisation (MATD). The role of the project sponsor, responsible for the implementation of the project, is assumed by Deutsche Welthungerhilfe (WHH) in cooperation with a local NGO. The target group that benefits from the measures is primarily the rural population in the Gao region. Implementation began in January 2022 and is designed to last for 42 months.
