The project involves assembling a tunnel boring machine at the North Bergen construction site and aims to replace and rehabilitate the existing 116-year-old North River Tunnel damaged by Superstorm Sandy. The tunnel boring machines are automated and imported from Germany. The project includes a $1.3 billion contract awarded for the longest tunnel boring segment beneath the Hudson River to a joint venture of Traylor Bros. Inc., Walsh Group, and Skanska AB. The tunnel is scheduled to open in 2035, with construction resuming fully in March 2026 after a temporary funding pause. |
