The project includes the use of automated tunnel boring machines from Germany and aims to replace and rehabilitate the existing 116-year-old North River Tunnel damaged by Superstorm Sandy. The first tunnel boring machine components arrived at the North Bergen construction site in March 2026 and are being prepped for assembly. The project faced a temporary pause in early 2026 due to funding issues but resumed in March 2026. The tunnel is scheduled to open in 2035, providing increased capacity and improved reliability for rail service between New Jersey and Manhattan. |
