Description

Description

The Gauteng government is addressing water supply challenges caused by non-payment, illegal connections, and ageing infrastructure. A massive infrastructure improvement drive is underway to upgrade the ageing water infrastructure, originally set up in the 1880s. The project includes readiness to receive water from the Lesotho Highlands Water Project, establishment of a special purpose vehicle between Rand Water and eMfuleni Local Municipality to assist water provision, and the opening of a new purification plant at Rand Water's Zuikerbosch plant in Vereeniging. Public-private partnerships (PPPs) are also being advanced to tackle non-revenue water, pipe replacement, and water reclamation, with support from the Development Bank of Southern Africa and transactional advisors appointed by the National Treasury's Government Technical Advisory Centre.
