Description

The GT Acajutla generation plant is located close to the port of Acajutla, approximately 85-km west of San Salvador and 60-km south of Santa Ana and consists of two bunker-fired steam units and three diesel fired gas turbines. On July 30, 1999 Comision Ejecutiva Hidroelectrica del Rio Lempa (CEL) sold 80% of its shares to Duke Energy International for $124 million. The financial closure was reached on Sept. 3, 1999. The main competitors are: Division Generadora Hidroelectrica de CEL (388-MW), Geotermica Salvadorena (151-MW), Generadora Salvadorena (87.4-MW) and several small generators (50-MW). Duke Energy will invest $75-million in the modernization of this company which will add approximately 100-MW of combined-cycle electric generation. In Nov. 2000, Duke Energy completed the expansion of the power plant, which brought the total capacity to 290 MW. In December 2016, Duke sold all its Latin American assets to Orazul for US$ 1.2 billion.
