Description | The Second Southern Italy Development Project is being created due to a major problem which was not fully recognized in the original plan. The plan did not provide the financial and educational programs necessary to assure full utilization and maintenance for all of the public works and land improvements. This problem is now fully recognized and steps are being taken to solve it. This is the first project on a large scale attempted by an Italian government in order to deal with unemployment and low standards of living from which Southern Italy had suffered for decades. Relief of unemployment in Southern Italy is one of the goals of this project. Presently most of the ground work is being done to collect statistical data on how to increase agricultural production. Most of the land reclamation and agricultural projects are still in their initial stages, and it will take another year or two before the other projects begin. |
