Description

Description

General Motors (GM) has indefinitely suspended the development of its next-generation large electric pickup truck, originally targeted for a 2028 release. The affected models include the GMC Sierra and Chevrolet Silverado. The suspension follows a slowdown in U.S. electric vehicle demand and the removal of electric vehicle subsidies by former President Donald Trump. GM had converted its Detroit-Hamtramck internal combustion engine plant into an electric vehicle-dedicated factory called 'Factory Zero' at a cost of $2.2 billion. The factory's operations have been suspended, and approximately 1,300 workers have been placed on unpaid leave. GM is also considering accelerating hybrid vehicle adoption and is in discussions to develop an Extended-Range Electric Vehicle (EREV) system and plug-in hybrid versions of the Sierra and Silverado at existing internal combustion engine factories in Michigan.
