The Road Port and Waterway Project will provide financial assistance in the amount of US$ 28 million to further the development of the transportation system of the Belgian Congo. The project will consist of construction, reconstruction and improvement of: (i) 1,963 km of roads comprising farm-to-market connections, links between regional centers, and feeder roads to the river ports and railheads; (ii) 2,837 km of pioneer roads linking agricultural development projects with the nearest access point on the existing transport system, or with processing plants; and (iii) ancillary works of bridges and ferries. The emphasis of this project is on the improvement of local or regional connections, on the gradual increase of the standards of roads as traffic grows, and on the replacement of seasonal earth roads by all-weather roads. Expansion and improvement of the Belgian Congo road, port, and waterway network is necessary to implement the development programs now under way and in planning.
