Description | The GenomeIndia Project is a coordinated national effort launched in January 2020 by the Department of Biotechnology under India's Ministry of Science and Technology to sequence the genomes of a representative sample of Indians and build a reference database reflecting India's genetic diversity. The project involved over 20 research institutions and sequenced genomes from 83 population groups, including rural, urban, and tribal populations, covering India's four major linguistic families. The project completed whole genome sequencing of 10,074 individuals by February 2024, with data archived at the Indian Biological Data Centre and a biobank established at the Centre for Brain Research, IISc, Bengaluru. |
