The project involves the construction of a new 8-lane toll-free immersed-tube tunnel that will replace the aging George Massey Tunnel on Highway 99 in British Colombia, Canada.The project includes constructing a tunnel with three general-purpose travel lanes and one dedicated transit lane in each direction. The tunnel will include bike and pedestrian crossings. Additionally, the existing Deas Slough Bridge will be replaced, and a southbound general-purpose lane will be added on Highway 99. These improvements will result in smoother travel at 80 km/h compared to the current average of 30 km/h. A new connection for transit buses has also opened, reducing travel time for southbound trips. Construction of bus-on-shoulder lanes south of the tunnel is underway to further improve travel times and transit reliability in the corridor.
