Description
Description | The Open Program for the Expansion of Power Transmission in Georgia, Phase 2 project is designed as an open program and is a follow-up phase to the Open Program for the Expansion of the Transmission Network in Georgia project (BMZ No. 201366327). It builds on the FC project Black Sea Energy Network (BMZ No. 200865543). On the basis of the ten-year plan for the expansion of the power transmission network (Ten Year Network Development Plan, TYNDP) of the state transmission company, JSC Georgian State Electrosystems (GSE), the 500 kV transmission line from Tskaltubo to Akhaltsikhe was identified together with the partner as the first component to be financed as a priority from the program. The construction of the 220/110 kV Ozurgeti substation to strengthen the transmission infrastructure in Guria and the construction of the 220/110 kV substation in Lajanuri were selected as further components. The latter is part of the so-called Tskaltubo Northern Ring. The EBRD is co-financing the program. The final allocation of the program will be decided after a detailed feasibility study. The further expansion of the network is a prerequisite for the construction of new hydroelectric power plants in Georgia and is intended to support and expand the existing opportunities for electricity export, especially to Turkey. In this way, this project contributes to the secure and reliable coverage of the energy needs of Georgia and the South Caucasus region in line with the German government's Caucasus Initiative and the EU's neighborhood policy. By reducing greenhouse gas emissions, the project has positive effects on environmental and climate protection and supports the further economic development of Georgia. |
