Description | The German governing coalition has agreed to build 2GW of new hydrogen-fired power plants and at least 8GW of new hydrogen-ready gas-fired power plants. These power stations will be dispatchable to ensure electricity supply when renewable sources are limited. The 10GW of dispatchable capacity is planned for commissioning in 2031, with hydrogen-ready gas plants making up at least 8GW and the remaining 2GW tendered under a technology-neutral approach. Additionally, 2GW of hydrogen-capable power plants will be tendered in 2026-27 for commissioning in 2032, supported by operating-cost subsidies for a limited period. All hydrogen-ready gas plants must be decarbonised by 2045 through hydrogen use or carbon capture and storage. |
