Description

Description

Germany's electricity grid suffers from a dysfunctional power market due to its refusal to split its single electricity price bidding zone, causing significant costs to the European electrical grid. The mismatch between power generation in the north and consumption in the south leads to congestion and high balancing costs. Despite calls from neighbors and the EU to create separate price zones to address this issue, Germany resists reform. The country plans to spend over €6 billion in 2026 to subsidize this dysfunctional system, including an industrial power tariff allowing companies to pay reduced rates.
