The continued low electrification rate in peri-urban and especially rural regions of Uganda, combined with very low electricity consumption per inhabitant, represents a significant obstacle to economic and social development. The GET ACCESS project addresses this problem and aims to improve the supply of climate-friendly renewable energy to remote rural regions for households, businesses and social institutions. The module is part of the Green Transformation development cooperation program to promote affordable, reliable and climate-neutral access to energy in Uganda. Key measures to achieve the goal include promoting the construction and operation of decentralized, solar-powered village power plants in around 130 villages and promoting the productive use of energy, with targeted support for women-led businesses. The GET ACCESS project builds on the approach and experience from the Pro Minigrid project piloted by GIZ. The project sponsor is the Ugandan Ministry of Energy. The measure is to be implemented as a PPP measure by tendering for subsidies to private project developers for the construction and operation of the village power plants. The project is being implemented in four clusters in Paloyrinya - Maaji, Kalangala-Wakiso, Buvuma East - buvuma West and Lake Albert. These regions have growth potential in fishing and agriculture, which is supported in parallel by measures to strengthen the productive use of energy. The direct target group of the project is local households, companies and public institutions. Around 25,000 households are to be reached. The total cost of the project is around EUR 35.50 million, and is financed through contributions from the German BMZ (EUR 15 million), the EU (EUR 10 million), the Ugandan government (EUR 5 million) and private developers (EUR 5.25 million).
