Core problem The private sector currently has little presence in the Zambian energy sector. ZESCO owns over 85% of the installed generation capacity. Over 80% of this is based on large hydropower plants. In dry years in particular, actual production is limited due to the lack of diversification in the energy mix. In order to meet the steadily growing demand for electrical energy in recent years, significant investments are necessary in the transmission, distribution networks and generation plants, which are in great need of rehabilitation and cannot be financed through public funds alone. Zambia has great potential, particularly in the area of renewable energies, with regard to solar PV and (small) hydropower. Module objective Improved framework conditions for private investment in grid-connected renewable energies up to 20 MW in order to contribute to climate-friendly development, the reduction of GHG emissions and poverty alleviation. GET FiT Zambia also supports the Zambian government in implementing the Renewable Energy Feed-in Tariff (REFiT). Key outputs Additional generation capacity of up to 150 MW through smaller renewable energy plants. GHG emissions are avoided. Leverage of private capital for investments in renewable energies. Target group The target group are current and future electricity consumers in Zambia, who benefit from the additionally available, environmentally friendly and low-cost electricity. Contribution to the national implementation of the 2030 Agenda The FC module supports the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and contributes to the goals SDG 7 (affordable and clean energy), SDG 8 (decent work and economic growth), SDG 9 (industry, innovation and infrastructure) and SDG 13 (climate action).
