Description
Description | Solar energy is playing an increasingly important role in the Ghanaian energy sector. In addition to many advantages, there are also some challenges with traditional land-based solar PV systems, including high land consumption and electricity generation that fluctuates greatly depending on the weather and time of day. An innovative solution to meet these challenges is floating solar systems, in which the solar panels are installed on bodies of water. This not only reduces additional land consumption, but also offers the advantage of using solar and hydropower in a complementary way, especially in combination with existing hydroelectric power plants. By using existing infrastructure to collect electricity at these locations, the costs and time required for the projects can also be significantly reduced. The target group here is Ghana's current and future electricity consumers, who benefit from a more reliable and cost-effective electricity supply. Floating solar systems are therefore an innovative solution for using solar energy efficiently and thereby promoting the expansion of renewable energies in Ghana (key message). On the one hand, this reduces the country's dependence on oil imports and, on the other hand, makes a significant contribution to achieving climate goals by reducing greenhouse gases and implementing adaptation measures to climate change. In the context of the reform and investment partnership, innovative approaches in the field of renewable energies are to be promoted. Therefore, the promotion of a floating solar project as an innovative approach with the project sponsor Volta River Authority (VRA) fits very well with the objectives of the reform and investment partnership. Planned measures - Construction of a floating solar plant (30 MW) - Implementation of accompanying gender measures - 2-year operational support |
