Ghana - Accra Sewerage Improvement Project (ASIP)

The Accra Sewerage Improvement Project (ASIP) follows the National Environmental Sanitation Policy. The project represents a top priority of the Government as stipulated in the Ghana Poverty Reduction Strategy II (2005-2009). It aims at implementing the institutional reforms and rehabilitating and expanding the sewerage and sanitation systems in Accra. The ASIP project will provide two new major Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) at Densu Delta and Legon to cover the 2020 design horizon. The existing institutional small treatment plants scattered across Accra city will be gradually phased out. The proposed treatment concept is based on waste stabilization ponds with an outfall discharging into the sea in the case of Densu Delta STP and into water courses in the case of Legon STP. The project will comprise six components as follows: (i) Treatment Plants and Pumping Stations, (ii) Sewerage Networks and Sanitation Facilities, (iii) Environmental Measures, (iv) Institutional Strengthening, (v) Engineering Services, and (vi) Project Management. Its implementation will help achieve the national targets by providing improved sanitation and sewerage facilities in the project area.
