Giant Mine Remediation Project

The Giant Mine Remediation Project is a multi-decade effort to reduce environmental risks from arsenic contamination and derelict buildings left by the former gold mine. The project includes deconstruction of the roaster, underground stabilization, paste backfill, demolition of the town site, construction and outfitting of a new water treatment plant, contaminated soil remediation, mill building decontamination, installation of thermosiphons to freeze arsenic chambers, Baker Creek remediation and realignment, and building tailings covers. The project also involves infrastructure improvements along the Ingraham Trail and a perpetual care plan for long-term monitoring and maintenance.
