Description

Description

The Giasa Cogeneration project involves the expansion of a cogeneration plant fuelled with sugar cane bagasse from 20 MW to 30 MW in the municipality of Pedras de Fogo, state of Paraiba. Giasa SA is part of the Tavares de Melo Group. The project cost was estimated at US$4.5 million (10 million real). In November 2005, Banco Nacional de Desenvolvimiento Economico e Social (BNDES) approved a US$3.15 million (7 million real) to Giasa for the expansion of the cogeneration plant. Giasa was granted a long term PPA under the terms of the Financial Support Program for Investments in Alternative Sources of Electric Energy (PROINFA). PROINFA was a government sponsored renewable energy program in which wind, biomass, and small hydro projects selected for development were guaranteed 20-year power sales contracts with federal utility Eletrobras at pre-specified prices and receive access to BNDES financing. In November 2009, the french group Louis Dreyfus Commodities incorporated the Giasa Power Plant. Sponsor name needs to be updated
