This project is the first step in the five-year program for the integrated study of the Iullemeden Aquifer Systems - Taoudéni / Tanezrouft and the Niger River. The Project consists of relevant AWF support to the seven countries to provide the water structures with the necessary tools to ensure integrated and sustainable management of water resources. It fits perfectly into the AWF's areas of intervention, including water governance, and knowledge on water, and responds to national and regional priorities. The project will strengthen the capacity of basin countries for transboundary aquifer management. It will also lay the groundwork for broader involvement of technical and financial partners and countries for cross-border diagnostic analysis (DAT) and the development of the Strategic Action Plan (SAP) for the development of the water resources of the hydraulic complex by the aquifer systems of the IAS, the SAT, the Niger River and, as the case may be, the Senegal River. The project comprises the following components, mainly implemented by a specialized consulting firm: (i) Improvement of knowledge and assessment of water resources throughout the Iullemeden System - Taoudéni / Tanezrouft; (ii) Cross-border risk analysis and management and setting up of a consultation framework for the SAI, SAT and Niger River group; (iii) Building management capacity and raising public awareness. The duration of the project is estimated at 24 months and the total cost is estimated at 1,511,500 Euros.
