Description | Gilman Avenue Streetscape Project Share this: Facebook Twitter LinkedIn Project Timeline 2018 - 2019 Community Update Pending TBD Construction Begins Pending TBD Construction Complete Pending Project Status Current Improvements Provide a calmer neighborhood based roadway Install sidewalk extensions (bulb-outs) at street corners to increase the visibility of people crossing and shortening crossing distances Install sidewalk extensions (bulb-outs) to improve access, transit service travel time and reliability Install street trees and pedestrian scale lighting Bus Routes and Rail Lines 29 Sunset Neighborhoods Bayview / Hunters Point Project Details, History or Features OVERVIEW As part of the approved Candlestick and Hunters Point Shipyard development, the Gilman Avenue Streetscape Improvement project aims to enhance the street and sidewalks to create a neighborhood based corridor that promotes safety and security rather than a direct access route to Candlestick Park. Furthermore, the improvements made to Gilman will better connect the neighborhood to public transit, nearby destinations, recreation and employment opportunities. Gilman Avenue will receive a number of pedestrian safety and access improvements such as pedestrian and bus bulb-outs as well as new trees and pedestrian level lighting. PROJECT LOCATION The Gilman Avenue Streetscape Improvement project is located in the Bayview-Hunters Point neighborhood on Gilman Avenue between 3rd Street and Arelious Walker Drive. WHAT IS PROPOSED Traffic Signals (monitor traffic flow and pedestrian right-of-way) Intersection Bulb-outs (improve visiblity and reduces crossing distances) Center Turn Lane (connects to side streets such as Jennings, Ingalls, Hawes, and Arelious Walker) Street Trees (enhance the neighborhood's aesthetic and trees are maintained by the city) Pedestrian-scale lighting (improves visibility and safety) WHAT IS NOT PROPOSED Parking meters Reduction of sidewalk width Removal of driveways or property access NEXT STEPS After extensive public outreach from 2014 to 2016, design details are currently being confirmed. Beginning in mid-2018, the project team consisting of the SFMTA and FivePoint, will be reaching out to community members to provide an overview of the project, including the design details, and explain whether some components of the project can receive community input.
