Gjakova and Rahovec Water Supply

In November 2001 Gelsenwasser AG signed a two year management contract for the water utility in Gjakova, Kosovo. The contract was awarded by the United Nations Interim Administration. Gelsenwasser won an open international tender for the management contract. The goal of the contract was to strengthen the regional water supply company of Gjakova, Rahovec and Lumbhardi region of Kosovo. The water utility supplied drinking water to some 200,000 people. The contract became operational in January 2002. In 2005 an extension was signed, giving Gelsenwasser management rights until January 2007. The World Bank provided $4.6 million to the United Nations Interim Administration for the project. German bilateral agency KfW also provided 9 million Euros in financing. The management contract ended in January 2007. A team of local experts took over the management of the Regional Water Supply Company of Gjakova/Rahovec.
