Description | The Global Centre of Rail Excellence (GCRE) is a proposed international rail testing centre in Wales, intended to include a rail testing and certification track, Research and Development Centre, Education and Conference facilities, and a 100-bed hotel. The project was introduced in July 2017 as a replacement for the failed Circuit of Wales project, with an initial estimated cost of £100 million, later escalated to £400 million. The project has faced criticism for mismanagement and lack of demand, with calls for an investigation into the expenditure of public funds. |
