Description

Description

Core problem The lack of financial, technical and organizational capacity of national seed banks in Africa is contributing to the loss of native seeds and their properties. Module objective The aim of the module is to improve the conservation, availability and use of agricultural genetic resources in selected national seed banks in Africa. Specifically, the national seed banks in Ghana, Nigeria, Zambia, Ethiopia and Kenya are supported. Key outputs Operating cost subsidies for selected national seed banks in Africa are provided in the long term. The technical and organizational capacities of selected national seed banks in Africa are improved. The direct target group is aware of the potential for use and is being utilized. Target group National seed banks and their users (national research institutions, breeders, seed multipliers, farmers) are the target group of the project. In addition to the direct users, there are farmers in the countries. In a broader sense, the entire world population benefits from the increase in genetic diversity. Contribution to the national implementation of Agenda 2030 (not in the MV) The project therefore contributes to the goals 1 "end poverty in all its forms everywhere and for good", 2 "end hunger and create food security", 3 "promote health and well-being for all", 13 "take action to combat climate change" and 15 "protect ecosystems and halt biodiversity loss for sustainable development" and thus to the implementation of Agenda 2030.
