The IDB will provide support to the Global Environmental Citizenship project executed by UNEP/ROLAC and 6 regional civic organizations: PARLATINO; Consumers International; International Union of Local Authorities; Latin American Council of Churches; International Union for the Conservation of Nature; World Association of Community Broadcasters. The Global Environmental Citizenship Project (GEC) will strengthen the capacity of these organizations to generate public awareness, increase levels of understanding of global environmental issues and mobilize support in the countries of the region for the objectives of the Global Environment Facility (GEF) in the thematic areas of climate change, biodiversity, international waters. The project will provide assistance for activities that build public awareness, increase public participation, and support improved decision-making on matters effecting the global environment. Through these organizations and with the support of the Forum of Environmental Ministers of Latin America and the Caribbean, the project will carry out demonstration activities in Argentina, Chile Costa Rica, Ecuador, Mexico and Peru. The specific objectives of the IDB support is to fund the preparation and production of technical education materials on the focal areas of global concern.
