Description

Description

In low- and middle-income countries (LMIC), mortality and disease rates remain very high due to poverty-related infectious diseases and increasingly chronic diseases, malnutrition and inadequate maternal and child health. Because commercial research and development is primarily geared towards the needs of the US and European markets, the availability of effective and appropriate health products and technologies (GPT) is limited due to a lack of or insufficient financial incentives for private sector research and development. The aim of the project is to increase the availability of new and affordable GPT in LMIC to combat poverty-related diseases. The main measure of the project is the provision of a grant of the USD equivalent of 15.5 million euros from the federal government to the Global Health Investment Corporation (GHIC) to implement the Catalytic Health Investment Platform (CHIP). As part of the platform, the GHIC uses the paid-in capital to provide financing solutions to impact investment funds, companies and other organizations in the field of global health and global health security (first use). The project makes a direct contribution to global health impact investment funds (target funds) that have yet to be selected and to other companies and organizations that will attract further investors with the help of an anchor investment from the platform (from grants to equity solutions) or will be enabled to develop GPT and make it available in LMIC by providing support measures. The project will therefore also have an indirect impact on populations in LMIC, including vulnerable groups such as women and children, as well as on industry partners such as small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the health sector, whose products can also be used and financed in LMIC.
