The Brazilian company Performance Centrais Hidreletricas was granted authorizations to build two small hydro power plants located in the state of Goais (48 MW in total capacity). The 30-year contracts were signed with the regulatory agency ANEEL in December 2002 and February 2004. In April 2007, management of both projects was transferred to Goias Sul S.A., a subsidiary of Neoenergia S.A. The first contract signed was for the PCH Goiandira, which was set to be built at the Verissimo river with a capacity of 27 MW. Construction works on this plant started in 2007, and the unit was expected to become operational in 2010. The other project, PCH Nova Aurora, was implemented on the same river with a capacity of 21 MW. This plant should be also be operational by 2010. Goias Sul S.A. committed to invest US$ 129.7 million (BRL 253 million) in the construction of the two power plants. Financial closure was achieved in November 2007, when the company signed a US$ 62.1 million (BRL 121 million) contract with BNDES. PCH Goiandira became operational in November 2010, while PCH Nova Aurora commenced operations in January 2011.
