Description

Description

California is facing a costly invasion of golden mussels, an invasive species clogging water supply infrastructure such as intake screens, pumps, pipes, and canals. The infestation was first detected in the Port of Stockton in October 2024 and has spread to areas including Merced County's O'Neill Forebay. Water districts are implementing chemical and mechanical treatments, including a two-phase chemical treatment plan and testing hot water mechanical cleaning and ultraviolet light. The state has allocated $20 million through Proposition 4 for recreational boat inspections to prevent further spread, but the potential damages could reach $500 million annually. The state is urged to provide financial support to affected water agencies to manage the infestation and prevent further damage to water supplies, food production, and infrastructure.
