Description

The Goldendale Energy Storage Project is a proposed pumped-water storage system on 681 acres near the Columbia River at John Day Dam. It involves sending water from an upper reservoir through a 2,400-feet elevation drop to a lower reservoir on the site of a former aluminum smelter. The project could produce between 100 and 1,200 megawatts, generating electricity up to 12 hours per day. It is in the final design and engineering stage with plans to be operational by 2032. The project aims to balance the electrical grid during high demand and provide flexible capacity in the Pacific Northwest and California. It is expected to create 3,000 construction jobs and 60 operational jobs, generating $14 million in annual tax revenue for Klickitat County.
