Google, in collaboration with startup Fervo Energy, is developing a first-of-its-kind enhanced geothermal system (EGS) in Nevada. This project uses horizontal drilling and fiber-optic monitoring to create a dual horizontal-well system that mimics a heat exchanger buried deep in hot rock, forming a closed fluid circuit through engineered fractures. The system converts thermal energy into electricity feeding back into the local grid and integrates with local grid dispatch, data center load profiles, power electronics, and predictive control algorithms.
