Google Nebraska Data Center and Utility-Scale Natural Gas Plant

Google is proposing to build a massive data center in Nebraska that could require 1,000 to 3,000 megawatts of power, more than three times the peak summer demand of the entire city of Lincoln. The data center would be powered by a privately built utility-scale natural gas plant, potentially the largest in the state, with carbon capture technology to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The project involves Google, Tenaska (an Omaha-based energy developer), and Tallgrass Energy (natural gas and carbon dioxide pipeline company). The project could be online as soon as 2029, pending legislative approval of a bill allowing private power plants to connect to the local grid and sell excess power back to utilities.
