Description

Description

The Gordie Howe International Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge connecting Windsor, Ontario, Canada, and Detroit, Michigan, USA. Construction began in 2018, and the bridge will have three lanes in each direction. It is among the top five longest bridges in North America and is expected to ease congestion and streamline cross-border trade. The bridge was delayed but is scheduled to open on July 27, 2026. The project involves a revenue-sharing deal between Canada and the United States, with Canada initially receiving 50% of toll profits for the first 15 years, and the other 50% going into an economic development fund on the U.S. side. The U.S. must agree to any toll changes beyond certain limits. Canada fronted the full construction cost of $6.4 billion and will collect 100% of revenue until the investment is recouped, estimated to take at least 50 years.
