Opened in 2016, it provides a flat route through the Alps, allowing trains to travel at speeds up to 155mph, significantly reducing travel time for freight and passenger trains. The tunnel was built to replace the original Gotthardbahn rail tunnel completed in 1882, with construction taking 17 years and involving advanced engineering techniques such as reinforced steel rings to support the mountain above and a massive drill to carve through the mountain. |
