Description

Description

The Gotthard Base Tunnel in Switzerland is the world's longest and deepest railway tunnel, running 57.1 km beneath the Swiss Alps. It took 17 years to complete and began operation in 2016. The tunnel connects Zurich, Switzerland to Milan, Italy, reducing travel time by almost an hour and increasing cargo transport capacity. It is a strategic part of the Rhine-Alps corridor linking northern and southern Europe. The project cost 12.2 billion Swiss francs and involved thousands of professionals from 15 countries. The tunnel faces challenges such as high rock pressure, internal temperatures up to 46°C, and geological variations, requiring advanced engineering solutions. It has environmental benefits by shifting cargo from roads to rail, reducing pollution and accidents. The tunnel underwent closure for over a year after a derailment in 2023 and is undergoing modernization with scheduled interruptions until 2027.
