Gourma Biodiversity Conservation Project

The objective of the Gourma Biodiversity Conservation Project for Mali is that biodiversity degradation trends are stopped and, in some cases, reversed in key conservation areas. The project has the following four components: Component 1) Global Environment Facility (GEF/FFEM) will finance: local capacity building; studies including ecological diagnostic and applied research; conservation area creation and management. Component 2) GEF/FFEM will finance: community awareness building; community training; complementary diagnostics on biological resources of communal land; specific studies to explore options for: ecological restoration outside conservation areas; and tourism development and private sector involvement; and biodiversity-related local initiatives. Component 3) GEF/FFEM will finance: support to the Intercommunal Orientation Committee (CIO), Communal councils (CC) and Centers for Communal Councils (CCC); contracting out design, creation and capacity building of the Intercommunal Gourma Association; and studies and workshops. Component 4) This component is divided into 3 sub-components: Support to Gourma operation; National supervision and stocktaking; and Project management and audits.
