The project involves the development of a 25 MW power plant utilizing photovoltaic technology and a 5MWh battery energy storage system in the Grand Bara region of Djibouti. This initiative, developed under a Build-Own-Operate and Transfer (BOOT) model. The sponsor of the project AMEA Power has signed a 25-year power purchase agreement with Électricité de Djibouti (EDD). The Sovereign Fund of Djibouti will join the project as a minority shareholder before financial close. The country has set a goal to reduce its carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 40% by the year 2030. The solar power project contributes to this objective by providing a renewable energy source that produces electricity with lower environmental impact compared to conventional fossil fuels. The project aims to have a positive impact on the local population by providing electricity to approximately 66,500 people. In December 2023, AMEA Power signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) which will see the capacity of the plant increase to 50MW of PV plus 10MWh of BESS. The agreement was signed on the COP28 climate conference in Dubai.
