Grand Central Terminal Electrification and Reconstruction

completed

Following a fatal train wreck in 1902, New York Central undertook a monumental project to electrify the rail lines entering Manhattan, replace steam locomotives with electric trains, and construct a new Grand Central Terminal. The project involved sinking tracks underground, building a two-level track system, and creating a new terminal to handle increased ridership. The project also included the innovative use of air rights to fund the construction by leasing the newly created buildable land above the buried train yards.
