Description

Description

The Grand Egyptian Museum is a significant museum project located outside Cairo, Egypt, featuring more than 100,000 artifacts, nearly 900,000 square feet of floor space, and a site spanning over 120 acres. The design includes airplane hangar-sized concourses, sculpted landscapes, conservation workshops, underground storage facilities, and 12 main galleries with direct views of the pyramids of Giza. The building features a vast entrance hall under a sawtooth roof, pyramid shapes throughout, and thick concrete floors for climate regulation. The museum was designed by Dublin-based Heneghan Peng Architects, with assistance from engineering firms Arup and Buro Happold, and Raafat Miller Consulting as the project's architect. The project faced delays due to the global financial crisis, the Arab Spring, and the COVID pandemic, but the design is now fully built and open to the public as of November 1, 2025.
