Description | The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) is located on the Blue Nile in Guba, Benishangul-Gumuz region, Ethiopia. It is expected to produce more than 5,000 megawatts of electricity, doubling Ethiopia's current output, with part of the electricity to be exported to neighboring countries. Construction began in 2011 and the dam has been inaugurated in 2025. The project was financed through national resources including bonds purchased by individuals, public companies, and loans from local banks. The dam aims to provide electricity to Ethiopia's large population and boost the country's economy, while also being a symbol of national pride and sovereignty. |
