Description
Description | The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) is Africa's largest hydropower project under construction since 2011 on the Blue Nile (Abay) river system. It has a design installed capacity of 5,150 MW from 13 turbines and features a ~170 m RCC main dam approximately 1.8 km long plus a long rockfill saddle dam with a ~74 billion cubic meter reservoir. The project is largely domestically financed through bonds, diaspora contributions, salary deductions, and the Commercial Bank of Ethiopia, making it a sovereignty project. Salini/Webuild led the civil works, while Ethiopia's state-owned METEC handled turbines and steelworks. METEC was terminated in 2018 due to delays and quality issues. |
