Description | The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) is Africa's largest hydropower project, built with concrete and engineering feats. It aims to generate hydropower, contribute to regional energy markets, and provide benefits such as fisheries, tourism, and water management. The project faced early challenges including delays due to an inexperienced local contractor but was turned around by restructuring and replacing contractors under the leadership of Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed. The dam is expected to generate one billion USD in annual revenue once fully operational and stabilize water flow benefiting downstream countries. |
