Description

The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam is a massive hydroelectric dam on the Blue Nile in Ethiopia. It is 1,800 meters wide, 175 meters high, and can hold up to 74 billion cubic meters of water in a reservoir larger than the city of London. The dam has been under construction for 14 years and has been generating renewable hydroelectric power since early 2022. It is expected to double Ethiopia's current electricity capacity and help control floods in eastern Sudan. The project is a source of tension with downstream countries Egypt and Sudan, who rely heavily on the Nile waters.
