Description | The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) is Africa's largest hydroelectric project, built on the Blue Nile in the western Benishangul-Gumuz region of Ethiopia. The $4.8 billion dam aims to transform Ethiopia's energy landscape by addressing chronic power shortages and supporting manufacturing ambitions, while also exporting surplus power to East Africa. The project took 14 years to complete and was partially financed through bonds purchased by Ethiopia's diaspora. |
