Description | The Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) is Africa's largest hydropower project located near the Sudanese border in Ethiopia's Benishangul-Gumuz region. It is expected to generate over 6,000 megawatts of electricity, doubling Ethiopia's current capacity, and aims to support domestic industrialization, rural electrification, and regional power exports. The project has been primarily funded through domestic bond sales and citizen contributions. The dam's construction is largely complete, with the reservoir nearing full capacity, and Ethiopia plans to inaugurate the dam in September 2025 amid ongoing disputes with Egypt and Sudan over water management. |
